FAQs

Are these cows grass-fed?

Yes— and not only are they grass-fed, our cows are free range grazers. Our stock have access to more than 35,000 acres of forage-rich hills in California’s central coast. This choice ensures our animals are raised in a stress-free environment, and will never see the inside of a feed lot.

Do you use growth hormones or antibiotics?

We do not use growth hormones to artificially stimulate the growth our cattle. Instead, we give the animals time to grow and develop their muscles naturally, resulting in a richer and more defined flavor. As for antibiotics, in rare instances where an animal becomes sick, we will administer antibiotics to ensure the animal doesn’t suffer, and the rest of the herd is not at risk. We believe this is the most humane practice for the health and well-being of our herd. Antibiotics also have a natural withdrawal window where it exits the animal’s system, and no animal is ever sent to processing until that window has passed.

Who handles the processing of the animal?

Processing of the animal is handled by our California state certified partner, A17 Butchering and Processing.

How long after placing the deposit will I recieve my order?

After a deposit is placed with Cuyama River Cattle Co, you will receive an email letting you know the status of the animal, and approximate time to processing. If you have purchased a quarter or half share, the animal will be sent to process once enough shares have been purchased to complete a whole share. This is done to ensure that there is little to no waste of the animal, and that every customer’s order can be processed to their unique needs. Processing and pickup time will be shared by our processing partner, but average time for regional pickup is 2-3 weeks.
